Non-urgent advice: Extended Access & Out of Hours

111 is the new number to call out of hours

Out-of-hours (OOH) refers to those times of the day and night when the surgery is not open – from 18:00 until 08:00 Monday to Thursday, and 18:00 Friday to 08:00 Monday.

If you need to contact a doctor OOH for matters which cannot wait until the next normal surgery, all you need to do is phone 111.

The call will then be automatically passed to someone to take details, and one of several things may then happen:

– If it is very urgent, an ambulance may be called

– For many problems, advice on the ‘phone will be all that is needed, and this will be available If you need to actually see a doctor, a time will be arranged for you to attend a Primary Care Centre (PCC) either locally or in Hereford.   Sometimes a home visit may be required for those too ill to go to a PCC – in this case a visit will be arranged.

– The minor injury unit at Ross Community Hospital is available for minor accidents and injuries. If the nurses there are unable to deal with the problem you could be asked to attend the OOH centre at Hereford, be transferred to the County Hospital in Hereford, or seen by a doctor locally if that is appropriate.

Please do not ask to see a doctor out of hours unless you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

Call 999 in an emergency. Chest pains and / or shortness of breath constitute an emergency.

Improved Access & Out Of Hours Services

Our practice is part of the Herefordshire GP Federation – Taurus Healthcare. Together, the practices of Herefordshire and Tenbury work to provide 24/7 access to General Practice. This is offered routinely via the Practice or at Improved Access hubs and urgently via 111. We all use the same computer system, so with your permission, it means the professional you speak with can see your whole record and understand your history.

Taurus Healthcare operates six Improved Access Hubs on behalf of Herefordshire General Practice.

These can be found at:

Pendeen Surgery (Ross-on-Wye)

Station Medical Centre (Hereford)

Ryeland Surgery (Leominster)

Kington Medical Practice

Ledbury Health Partnership

Nunwell Surgery (Bromyard)

Opening times vary, but you can find full details here: https://www.herefordshiregeneralpractice.co.uk/for-patients/7-day-improved-access.

Please note that these are not walk-in centres and you will need to make an appointment. To do so, please ask our reception staff for a ‘Taurus Extended Hours Appointment’.

If you need urgent support when surgeries are closed, NHS 111 can provide access to our local team. We provide telephone consultations, appointments at Station Medical Centre in Hereford and home visits, according to patient need.
